
"There is fear in the land," said Ignatieff, who has been holding consultations across the country in advance of the return of Parliament on Jan. 26th, stressing that Canadians are deeply worried about the economic recession and concerned for their jobs. Ignatieff said the test of the Harper government's Jan. 27 budget will be whether it preserves jobs and creates "jobs for the future."
"This party will be the party of hope for all Canadians," he declared.
Liberal spirits seem greatly buoyed by Ignatieff, who replaced Stephane Dion as leader in December. Since then the Liberals have rebounded in the polls, passing the Conservatives in popularity. See Liberals Leading in New Poll.
The Liberals have said they will join with other opposition parties to defeat the minority Conservative government if the upcoming budget fails to adequately address the American recession which has spilled over into Canada.
