CANADA - When Orangeville resident / nurse Sonia Varaschin disappeared and signs of a bloody struggle were found in her home and car people began to fear the worst. Yesterday the OPP confirmed that a body found in Caledon over the weekend was the 42-year-old nurse and that they are now pursuing a murder investigation.
Sonia Varaschin's death was officially declared a homicide by the Ontario Provincial Police on Tuesday afternoon. She was first reported missing August 30th and blood splatters were found throughout her home and also in her white Toyota Corolla the same day.
Several Facebook pages have been setup, including: In Loving Memory of Sonia Varaschin and Find Sonia Varaschin's Killer.
Meanwhile the town of Orangeville has gone into "lockdown mode". People now know there is a murderer on the loose and they worry about if the murderer will strike again. In the tightly knit community people's nerves are frayed, not because murders don't happen in the region (they do), but because normally in such cases the murderer is caught within the first 72 hours. The knowledge that such a brutal murder was committed right under their noses, that the murderer attempted to hide the body, that police have (or seem to have) no leads as to who did it... well its enough to cause stress on the whole community. The media buzzards aren't helping either.
OPP investigators said Tuesday that they “believe that someone in the community holds the key to solving this homicide.” They are hoping someone will step forward with information about Sonia' Varaschin's white Toyota Corolla and perhaps give a description of the person who killed her.
Based on criminal behavioural patterns its believed the murderer to be male, caucasian, in his late 30s to early 50s. He does NOT have to be a loner. He could be someone charismatic and likeable, as is the case with many psychopaths.
Police are also looking for blood-drenched bedding that was removed from Sonia Varaschin's home.
A $2,000 reward has been offered for anyone providing a tip leading to an arrest in the case of Sonia Varaschin's murder.
Sonia Varaschin's body was found in a wooded area in Caledon by someone walking their dog. Investigators believe her body was wrapped in bed linens, moved in her car and then dumped on Beech Grove Sideroad in the town of Caledon. Her white Toyota Corolla was found in an alleyway near a parkette in downtown Orangeville, with her trunk and front doors wide open.
Police have not offered any opinions over motive.
