At the centre of this complex and lengthy search are three dead teenagers: 15-year-old Kristen French, 14-year-old Leslie Mahaffy and 14-year-old Tammy Homolka. What followed was a plea bargain, videotapes, a publication ban and eventually a 4-month trial into one of the most horrific cases of kidnapping, torture, rape and murder that Canada has ever seen.On September 1st 1995 (15 years ago) rapist Paul Bernardo was found guilty by jury and sentenced to so much prison time he is undeniably going to die of old age in prison. His wife and accomplice Karla Homolka received a mere 12-year sentence for manslaughter, despite feeding up her younger sister as a gift to her husband.
Tammy Homolka died by choking on her own vomit.
Paul Bernardo is best described as a sadistic, egomaniac narcissist... he has since admitted to a string of rapes in Scarborough... and just one of thousands of rapists in Canada.
Every year (according to Statistics Canada) there is approx. 26,000 sexual assaults reported to police each year. However it should be noted that Canadians only report 9% to 10% of sexual assaults... which means there is between 260,000 and 286,000 sexual assaults per year. And only 20% of those include physical injuries.
The end result is that there is a lot of rapists and sexual assault crooks running around free in Canada. Rapists that have never seen the inside of a court room.
And for the few that do see the inside of a court room, the conviction rate is extremely low. Needless to say there is a lot of rapists out there.
And this is just Canada. Just imagine how bad it is in the USA which has 10 times the population and a much higher crime rate.
Meanwhile 57 Bayview Drive, the house where all three young girls were raped and murdered has been destroyed. The city bought the land and it was a vacant lot for many years. Today a new home stands there and a happy young couple have bought it. It even has a new number.
A more fitting end would have been a memorial park.
