Lady Gaga denounces Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell

POLITICS/SEX - Pop star Lady Gaga (famous for such hits as “Bad Romance”, “Paparazzi” and “Poker Face”) was in Maine Monday to urge United States senators to repeal the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays. More than 2,000 people attended the rally where the Grammy-winning celebrity stood in front of members of the American military who had been discharged for revealing they are gay.

Some U.S. military recruiters deliberately ask questions about sexual orientations and attempt to screen out gay people. Under the "don't ask" policy recruiters are not supposed to be asking questions about sexual orientation, but some still do anyway. Fortunately many gay recruits "don't tell" and thus still manage to slip through the screening process.

Lady Gaga called it an injustice that good-hearted gay soldiers are booted from military service while straight soldiers are allowed to fight for their country. She suggested a new policy should target straight soldiers who are “uncomfortable” with gay soldiers in their midst.

“Our new law is called ‘If you don’t like it, go home!’ ” says Lady Gaga.

The rally was partially organized by Washington-based Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. The organization wants Republican Senators to vote to allow a repeal of the controversial “don’t ask don't tell” policy, put in place in 1993.

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a defence authorization bill that includes a repeal of the “don’t ask don't tell” policy. In the Senate, the bill only need 60 votes on Tuesday (today) to cut off debate and proceed straight to voting on the bill. Two senators are seen as the tie breakers in the vote as they are currently undecided.

For the rally Lady Gaga skipped her trademark bizarre outfits in favour of a black suit, American flag tie and a pair of glasses.

Last week at the Video Music Awards ceremony Lady Gaga won eight awards and was escorted by gay ex-servicemen who had been discharged from the military.
