HEALTH - Scientists have discovered a new superbug in India and Pakistan which is resistant to most antibiotics and are warning of a possible global pandemic. The bug has already spread to the U.K. after 37 people returned to Britain after undergoing cosmetic surgery in India or Pakistan.
The new superbug contains a gene called NDM-1 which alters bacteria, making it resistant to nearly all known antibiotics. Worse, this gene can have its DNA structure easily be copied and transferred from one type of bacteria to another.
The superbug is already spreading like wildfire in India. No deaths have been reported, but researchers are concerned it could attach itself to a more virulent and deadly strain. They're not certain why so many people getting cosmetic surgery in India or Pakistan are coming back with the superbug, likely something to do with the bug being transferred via wounds which haven't healed yet.
