Information about incident has since been declassified and now can be found on the British government website: ufos.nationalarchives.gov.uk. The Britain’s National Archives kept the incident and similar incidents classified. Often UFO incidents were only kept on file for 5 years and then destroyed, but the more credible incidents are kept permanently.
At the time Winston Churchill brought in a missile expert as a consultant to confirm the metallic object was not any kind of experimental missile. The consultant confirmed the description of the object matching the plane's speed and heading, combined with its noiselessness, did not match any technology dreamed of at the time.
Churchill was so spooked by the incident he decided to make it classified in an effort to prevent a public panic and mass hysteria, possibly destroying people's faith in the church. He later ordered the armed forces in 1952 to submit a report on "flying saucer" incidents, but the British Ministry of Defense denied they existed.
Speculation abounds that the plane might have been an experimental German spy craft, but there is no evidence of German aircraft which could hover noiselessly or quickly match speed and heading so easily.

"For good or for ill, air mastery is today the supreme expression of military power and fleets and armies, however vital and important, must accept a subordinate rank." - Winston Churchill.
"The power of an air force is terrific when there is nothing to oppose it." - Winston Churchill.
"The great defense against the air menace is to attack the enemy's aircraft as near as possible to their point of departure." - Winston Churchill.
