POLITICS - A standoff in Pakistan ended today with the death of 9 Taliban hostage-takers who staged an audacious assault on Pakistan's army headquarters (Pakistan's version of 'the Pentagon'), taking 45 hostages. Pakistan's military fought back, staging a rescue operation today which rescued 42 hostages and killed the 9 hostage-takers.

Unfortunately 3 of the hostages were killed during the rescue attempt. Six soldiers and two commandos were also killed in the fighting.
One of the hostage-takers was taken alive, the leader Aqeel aka "Dr. Usman", a nickname he gained by working as an army medic in Afghanistan.
The problem is Waziristan, a stronghold for approx. 10,000 well-armed Islamic militants in north-western Pakistan along the border with
Afghanistan. Pakistan's government has tried three earlier offensives in Waziristan and all have ended in failure.
