CANADA - Vince Li, the Chinese immigrant who on the evening of July 30th 2008 stabbed and beheaded fellow passenger Tim McLean, while riding a Greyhound Canada bus near Portage La Prairie, Manitoba traveling the Trans Canada Highway, has been found NOT GUILTY due to insanity.Vince Li, 40, will be institutionalized without a criminal record and will be reassessed every year by a mental health review board to determine if he is fit for release into the community.
But here's the thing... if he is later determined to be "safe" they will release him back into the public. The argument is that he will no longer be a threat and was simply suffering from schizophrenia. HOWEVER, there is no cure for schizophrenia. He will always have it, so in theory he will ALWAYS be a threat.
Here is an interesting statistic: When asked if people could do any crime they wanted, without any repercussions in this life (or the next if you believe in an afterlife), 80% of people said they would commit murder. We could guess based on that statistic, that Vince Li evidently is in that 80%... but we would be making a mistake.
You see not all crazy people are murderers. Just like the vast majority of sane people aren't murderers either. Sure, people may have violent thoughts, but humans are a violent species. But what if someone is both crazy and a violent murderer?
If a % of the population is murderers, and a % of the population is crazy, it stands to reason that there will be a % of people that are both.
In which case, it begs the question whether an insane murderer should be placed in a prison in addition to the asylum.
Vince Li also previously asked for the death sentence, so its expected he will be on suicide watch.
