CANADA - Remember the Officer Bubbles incident from the G20 last year?
The woman who made Officer Bubbles famous is suing the Toronto police for $100,000 for false arrest and a violation of her Charter rights. Courtney Winkels, then a 20-year-old social worker volunteering as a street medic during the G20, was arrested after the incident on camera. The scene later became a viral video and made Officer Bubbles (Constable Adam Josephs) into a cartoon character and eventually a comic book character.
All this just because a girl was blowing bubbles.
Constable Adam Josephs is still kicking himself over that one.
Courtney Winkels isn't suing the Toronto Police over that incident however. The charges against her were immediately thrown out during her first court appearance. Her lawsuit is pending from the 50+ hours she spent in police custody where Winkels suffered “cruel and unusual” punishment, was sleep deprived and allegedly subjected to inhumane treatment at the temporary detention centre on Eastern Ave.
Winkels called the conditions at the Eastern Ave. jail “absolutely disgusting.” According to descriptions by other people wrongfully imprisoned during 2010's G20 the rooms they were kept in were better described as filthy sewers. Filthy even by sewer standards. Many of the people wrongfully arrested were also beaten, subjected to intimidation and threats by Toronto Police.
