Last year the gay, lesbian and queer event received $400,000 to help fund the event which brings in millions of dollars in tourism revenue every year. This year, nothing. No funding at all. Organizers say its going to be a very difficult year because the event needs lots of logistical support and paid police security to make sure everything goes smoothly.Instead the Conservative Party is continuing to fund the Royal Fair which is held annually in Toronto and frequented mostly by Ontario farmers. All other social events that bring in tourism dollars have been cut.
After all Ontario farmers are more likely to vote Conservative.
Industry Minister Tony Clement insists the decision has nothing to do with the Conservative caucus's anti-gay sentiments. Instead he says his government simply chose to fund fewer city events and give more money to small town and rural events.
Small towns and rural regions which as we all know are more likely to vote Conservative.
Events like the Calgary Stampede are still getting full funding. I think all the gays and lesbians in Alberta should crash the Calgary Stampede in full (or lack thereof) pride gear.
