I would rather ride a bicycle than drive in this car. Its that ugly.
True, they've done something remarkable in terms of technology. Volkswagen AG revealed this new concept car today at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The "L1" can go 96 km on 1 litre (or 282 miles per gallon). It has a turbo diesel engine, a battery pack, an electric motor and only weighs 840 lbs.
No word yet on how fast it can actually go, but I am willing to bet I could beat it across the intersection on a bicycle and be half a km down the street before the L1 catches up with me.
"If the L1 were to go into production in 2013, it would debut an entirely new lightweight car concept and introduce a new era in automotive production," says VW.
Except what douche-bag would buy a car that small and ugly? Its not practical for regular usage, its just a "get-you-there" car (in which case if all you want to do is just get there, you're better off on the bicycle).
What the world needs is a mid-size car that is lightweight, practical and will get a person (and their friends) to the place they want to go at a good reasonable speed. Without breaking their wallet or hurting the environment.
