CANADA - Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney may have to pay back $2 million CDN he was awarded in a 1997 libel settlement now that its been revealed he withheld information and lied while under oath when testifying about the Airbus scandal in which Brian Mulroney accepted bribes from German businessmen for helping in the sale of airplanes.
Critics say Mulroney should pay back the money with interest.
In the judge's report on the Mulroney-Schreiber Airbus scandal, Mulroney had an obligation to tell the truth about his business dealings with German-Canadian arms dealer Karlheinz Schreiber, who gave him three envelopes stuffed with at least $225,000 cash for helping to push through the sale.
In addition to the settlement money the Canadian government also paid for Brian Mulroney's legal bills, totalling $1.8 million CDN.
With interest it would be over $4 million CDN that Brian Mulroney would have to pay back, if forced to do so.
