Canada is not the only country to introduce incentives for buyers to choose more environmentally friendly vehicles.
Sweden plans to offer incentives equal to about $1,650 to those who buy vehicles that emit fewer than 120 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) per kilometre travelled.
CO2 emissions are directly related to fuel consumption.
An emissions rate of 120 grams per kilometre corresponds to a fuel-consumption rate of about 5.1 L/100 km.
At present, very few vehicles can achieve this, even in Europe.
"You should feel the benefits to the environment in your heart, but they should also be noticeable in your wallet," says Swedish Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren.
Sweden is an international leader in implementing environmental measures.
Among other things, that nation requires all major filling stations to provide at least one alternative fuel in addition to gasoline and diesel.
