CANADA - A new study shows that almost 70% of adults in Quebec gambled money in 2009. The study surveyed 12,000 Quebecers and a sample that size is considered to be accurate within 2%, 19 times out of 20.
The average Quebecer spends almost $500 each on gambling every year.
According to Dr. Sylvia Kairouz, a Concordia University professor and one of the study’s lead researchers, nearly 1.3% of Quebec’s adult population is at moderate risk of developing a gambling addiction.
0.7%, or close to 41,000 Quebecers, could become pathological gamblers.
Kairouz says online gambling (ie. online poker games) has become much more popular in recent years.
The study is the first part of a larger 5-year survey which will be completed in 2014.
So if 70% of Quebecers gamble, what does that say about Quebec as a province? Are they unique? Maybe. But we really can't tell unless we find out what percentages the other provinces gamble at. A national survey is needed.
